The first night of the Sheffield blitz was a terrifying time, my father remembered. The German Luftwaffe bombing on 12th December 1940 was one of the worst bombing raids in England at the time. My grandfather, Phillip George Markam (Originally Markeim) was born at the end of the nineteenth century, the youngest of 13 children. His father had come to England as an immigrant and in order to bring his whole family to England from their home on the Polish and Russian border, he swept the docks for pennies. Their mission – destroy the Ruhr Valley dams, Germany using Dr. Barnes Wallis’ ingenious bouncing bombs.
